I was deeply grateful to the Island County Amateur Radio Club, especially Larry da Ponte, for welcoming me to observe Field Day on Whidbey Island. Field Day is part emergency communications exercise, part public outreach, and part celebration of amateur radio service. ICARC is a well-oiled club with deep experience, strong mentorship, and a generous spirit. Their members clearly embody the “service” aspect of amateur radio by welcoming newcomers and sharing knowledge freely.
It was a valuable learning experience as I work to help restore the American Red Cross Disaster Services Net in San Juan County.
