A Mutual Aid Response Team (MART) is made up of neighbors preparing to assist neighbors during the critical first hours before outside help arrives.

Team members may also assist with urgent, non-emergency community needs (for example, a downed fence with livestock loose) and support special community events when requested.

• Complete a free, three-day training
• Complete one additional FEMA online course (Incident Command)
• Pass a background check
• Purchase a branded safety vest

Cost: $85 total (background check + safety vest)

To remain active: 10 volunteer hours per year through drills or service. Active members are eligible for additional training at no charge.

Yes. Team membership is not required to take the training.

We may also offer a separate one-day course for those who want basic rural preparedness skills but do not wish to volunteer.

Training modules are currently in development and will be submitted to EMS, Fire, Sheriff, and the Department of Emergency Management for review and comment prior to adoption.

Instruction will be provided by experienced trainers, using local resources whenever possible.

Planned modules include:

• First Aid and Basic Life Support
• Disaster Response Fundamentals
• Basic Carpentry Skills
• Emergency Shelter Training (Disaster Hubs, opening shelters, emergency feeding)
• Basic Emergency Communications

San Juan Islands PREPARE is a member of WA VOAD (Washington Volunteer Organizations Active in Disasters).

Deployment opportunities may be offered:

• Within 60 miles of the San Juan Islands, coordinated through VOAD with other charitable organizations
• Locally within the San Juan Islands, as mutual aid needs arise
